Garaad is:

We are not a production company. We are not a music label.

Garaad is a creative catalyst. We are a media studio, a team building facility, and a network. We are a part of Egypt’s media ecosystem, and we are based in Cairo.

We know that getting a project made is often a struggle with the lack of resources most of us have to face. It is fun and exciting, but the results can be disappointing. We really think that we can do better for our audiences, and we’d like to do our part.

Garaad is a full time endeavor, accepting submissions year-round for projects in film (short form), TV series, web series and channels, music and transmedia. Once a project is selected, we work with the team throughout the process -from development to distribution- and provide them with the funding and resources they need. The teams get access to Garaad’s facilities and network, where they can get the guidance and support they need to see their project go from idea to audience.

Egypt’s ecosystem has so much potential, and we believe in that potential. Yet, only a few are willing to take a risk with young and talented storytellers and musicians. And even fewer are willing to take a risk with new genres and experiences.

Garaad is willing to take that risk.

What kind of projects is Garaad interested in?

We’re looking for cutting-edge projects in film (short form), TV series, web series and channels, music, transmedia and graphic novels.

Who can submit?

Submissions are welcome from talents from all over Egypt as long as you’re over 18 years of age. Student submissions are accepted as long as the project isn’t for an class or course.

How can I submit?

We accept submissions through the form on our website. We won’t be able to accept submissions by email, mail, in-person or by homing pigeons.

What is an Audience Engagement Plan?

How do you plan to reach your audience? Especially if your project has a niche audience, it helps to have a plan to target and raise awareness.

Can I get feedback on a project before I apply?

No, but we suggest that you get feedback from your friends and peers.

We've already taken some funding. Can we still submit our project?

We like to work on projects that haven’t yet received funding from other companies or entities.

We don't want funding, but will you give us advice?

Unfortunately we can't.

Can a single person submit their project?

Yes, but the odds of being accepted are lower. When we receive an application by a team –even a producer/director team; or band/manager- we usually find a project with a better package, a more accurate budget and a more realistic schedule.

Do you accept submissions for animation projects?

Yes, of course.

I am a producer/writer with a project, but no director is attached yet. Can I apply?

Yes, but as mentioned earlier, team submissions have a better chance than individual submissions.

We are co-directors – can we apply?

Yes, you may apply as co-directors, provided that you make it clear in your submission documents.

Can an independent producer apply, associating himself with an established production company?

Yes, an independent producer can submit their project with his/her company brand.

I am non-Egyptian and would like to submit a project, is that possible?

Yes, provided that your team is predominantly Egyptian, and that your project audiences are in Egypt.

Do the submission materials have to be in English?

No, it can be in Arabic too.

How much are your budgets?

As much as a selected project needs. No more, no less.

Can I raise extra production finance? Can the project already have some financing secured?

No raising extra money can cost time and can get distracting from the creative process.

Will Garaad solicit applications?

Garaad may reach out to specific talents or artists for their projects, but these submissions will be assessed in the same way as any other and are not guaranteed selection.

What is the contractual agreement with Garaad? Does Garaad own the rights for the project when completed?

Once a project is selected, Garaad will sign a Project Support Agreement with the artist or team. With regards to the rights, Garaad does not own the rights to the completed project. The project artist/team own the rights and the intellectual property.

Will you sign an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement)? How do I know you won't steal my idea?

No, we won't sign an NDA. Here at Garaad, we take the confidentiality of submitted projects very seriously and we never share submission or personal info with any third party.

How much does Garaad take from the revenues if a project makes money?

Nothing. The team receives all revenues of the project.

Okay, so what does Garaad get out of this?

We typically sign a first-look deal with the project artist/team.

What is a first-look deal?

A first-look deal –also called a right of first refusal– is an agreement for a period of time that gives Garaad the opportunity to work with the artist again on another project before anyone else gets that opportunity.

Why didn't you accept our application?

There are probably a million (not really!) factors that are taken into consideration during the selection process. These factors include elements such as quality, budget, genre and target audience. So if we don’t accept your project, you shouldn’t stop working on it!

Why are you guys called Garaad?

Garaad means locust in Arabic. You can read more about them here.

Are you hiring?

No, not at the moment, but you can still send your CV and work sample (if applicable) to jobs@gara.ad, provided that you tell us what kind of job you’d like to have and what your role would be.
If you’re interested in an internship, please send your CV and a sample of work with the word “Internship” in the subject line.

I am a journalist or blogger and would like to do a piece on Garaad, who should I contact?

Please send us an email at: press@gara.ad
